Online video sharing site Veoh is going out of business. The AllThingsD blog says it cut the entire staff yesterday and a bankruptcy filing is expected soon.

So far no word on exactly what happened, but one of Veoh's boardmembers, Todd Dagres, tweeted the following today:

"Veoh is dead. Universal Music lawsuit was the main killer. Veoh won resoundingly but was mortally wounded by the senseless suit."

That suit he's referring is one where UMG alleged Veoh knew of and actively encouraged users to upload videos containing copyrighted music. Veoh ultimately won the suit after a judge dismissed it in a summary judgment ruling in September. UMG was planning an appeal of that ruling.

However it's unlikely the lawsuit was the sole contributor to the company's demise. It's long has problems monetizing the site resulting in a massive round of layoffs last year that reduced the size of the company by a third. It had been seeking a buyer, but the lawsuit served to frighten away most investors, and the pending appeal didn't help.

And Universal wasn't the first to bring suit against the company. In 2006, adult entertainment production firm Io Group filed a similar copyright infringement case against the service. Veoh also won that case, but ultimately stopped allowing users to post adult content.

As of now, the Veoh site is live and running. Company representatives did not immediately return requests for comment.

ONCE THE SITE GOES DOWN, VEOH LINKS WILL NO LONGER WORK.

Always sad to see another hosting site go down. We've lost so many in the last year already. We all need to be vigilant about who the remaining sites are and be aware of any that new ones that may now come along to fill the vacuum. The "five minute rule" with them  was a pain for some members, I know. I've been thinking of a thread here that would allow members to comment on which hosting site they prefer for viewing films. It seems like everyone has technical issues with one site or another, I'm putting the Naschy uploads on Veehd now because Gorelord has trouble viewing them on StageVu, for example. A shame for Veoh and a shame for us. The "ripping off the artists" vs. "allowing more people to experience content that they'll then go out and buy" debate will continue, I'm sure. Funny how you can win a battle but lose the war.

Yes Doc, you hit that right on the head.  We too seem limited by needing to upload to sites that will not delete our films after a month if no one downloads them, or for other reasons.  All that time and effort for just one film and then, "poof".  Regardless, your uploads are invaluable here so use what ever floats your boat in the moat.  smile

Oh no!
Veoh is (was?) one of the best vid sites, their documentary section was probably the best on the interwbs , on a par  and often even better than youtube.
I'll be mourning the loss

Okay just to give everyone a heads up on Veoh,it didn't go anywhere. It got bought out by another site called Qlipso. Veoh is still very much alive and well,so nothing to worry about. Tim
